Artifact 12 - A Comparative Study
Description

This artifact was created in the Fall of 2019 for Dr. Sandra Quiñones's GDIT 714, Leadership and Education in a Global Society. At the end of the course, each student was required to conduct a comparative study of the United States education system and the education system in a country of our choice and post this comparative study in written or digital format. Therefore, I used Glogster to create comparing the United States to Finland's approach to education. Unfortunately, the Glogster website is no longer accessible as services provided by Glogster.com have been temporarily disabled. Therefore, I presented a screenshot of my Glogster website.

Reflection

In this comparative study, I chose to compare the United States’ approach to education with that of Finland. At one time, Finland was the least educated country in Scandinavia, but it is now one of the most highly educated in the world (Darling-Hammond, 2017). To present this comparative study, I used Glogster, a web-based application that allows the combination of multimedia elements texts, images, videos, and audio to create an interactive digital poster. This was the first time I had used Glogster. Thus, it gave me the opportunity to try out a new platform for creating a visually stunning poster to facilitate this comparative study.

In this comparative study, I searched for the impact of globalization and technology on the education systems of Finland and the United States and the most important topics related to education in each country, including the system, successes, and challenges. In addition to this, I identified the reasons that made Finland one of the highest quality education systems. In this research, I concluded that both the United States and Finland have designed their own educational systems to meet the needs of their students. However, Finland takes a sustainable approach that leverages educational infrastructure. Finland's approach is also more student-centered and focused on teachers as the main driver of quality. The United States can learn from Finland's approach to education but cannot adopt the Finnish system due to the diversity and multiculturalism within the country (Matias, 2019).

This research assignment on Finland’s approach to education compared to the system of the United States was very helpful to me as an educator and a research practitioner. It has helped me gain the skills of comparative study to explore the similarities and differences between global and local educational systems.
