AECT Standard 3.6 - Diversity of Learners

"Candidates foster a learning community that empowers learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities" (AECT, 2012)

Description

This artifact was created in the Fall of 2018 for Dr. Joseph Kush’s GDIT 715 - Instructional Learning Theory, course. The objective of this project was to create a lesson plan for a learning unit using an instructional design model and one of the learning theories we had learned about during the semester. As part of this instructional design project, we were asked to describe how we meet the needs of diverse learners. Therefore, I created a lesson plan for a learning unit to be used in a second-grade science classroom in a way that meets the needs of diverse learners and made learning accessible to all students.

Reflection

In this instructional design, I first assessed the learners' characteristics, then used the ADDIE Design Model to create the lesson plan. The lesson plan highlighted the learning objectives, the instructional strategies, and the assessments that would be used to teach the students. In order to meet the different needs of learners in this instructional design, I used a variety of instructional strategies such as teacher demonstrations, multimedia, visualizations, hands-on activities, discussion, and peer collaboration during the lessons. Additionally, the plan described how learners' characteristics and diversity are considered in the planning process and how local, state, and federal policies and ethical practices apply. Therefore, I believe this artifact demonstrates my proficiency in AECT’s Standard 3.6, which states that “Candidates foster a learning community that empowers learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities."
